Good news out of Florida finally, new teachers could get a big pay bump if the governor has his way. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proposed on Monday to increase teacher starting salary to $47,500. The average teacher starting salary, in the state 67 counties, hovers around $41,000. At $46,125, Miami-Dade County has the highest starting salary for teachers in the state. New teachers will get up to 6,000 pay bump.
The Governor wants to allocate $600 million of his proposed 2020 budget to give teachers that well-deserving raise. The proposal will bump current teachers who are making less than $47,500 to that range.
Florida ranks 27 and 46 on the National Education Association’s annual report of average starting and all teacher salaries, respectively. New York and Mississippi have the highest and lowest teacher salary, with both states pay their $84, 227, and $44,926, respectively
