Prime Minister Justin Trudeau survived blackface controversy; his Liberal Party retains power. Millions of Canadians went to the polls yesterday to choose their new governing party, and they reelected the incumbent prime minister and its Liberal Party by a narrow margin.
Prime Minister Trudeau was marred in scandals before the federal elections. He was found guilty for attempting to obstruct justice, he apologized for wearing blackface, and his liberal base was angry at him for extending an oil pipeline in western Canada.
Numerous polls projected that Andrew Scheer and his Conservative Party had a real chance to win a majority of seats in parliament. However, Prime Trudeau survived. Andrew Scheer said that “tonight, Conservatives have put Justin Trudeau on notice and Mr. Trudeau, when your government falls, Conservatives will be ready and we will win.”
Mr. Trudeau Liberal Party lost 21 seats in the parliament. He will form a minority government. However, the Prime Minister can govern and get his legislation through parliament because the New Democrats Party, which has 24 seats, will mostly vote alone their Liberal Party counterparts.
During his victory speech, Mr. Trudeau thanked the Canadians for their support and said, “We will make life more affordable. We will continue to fight climate change. We will get guns off our streets, and we will keep investing in Canadians.”
