Cashback alone should not be the reason you apply for a credit card. However, if you are going to use credit cards, you might as well look into one that pays you for using it. Cashback is purely an incentive provided by credit card companies to get you to apply for their card. For example, Capital One Quicksilver Card offers unlimited 1.5% cashback on every purchase. So, if your discretionary expenses total $3,000 per month, you will get $45 ($3,000×0.015) back from Capital One for using the card to pay for your monthly expenses. That’s roughly $540 ($45*12) per year. Cashback works best for those who pay their full balance off each month. Otherwise, interest expense defeats the purpose of pursuing cashback.
